Core Licensing Rule: Windows Server 2016 Datacenter is licensed based on the physical cores of the server host. A minimum of 16 core licenses is required for any physical server, and each physical processor requires a minimum of 8 core licenses.

• CAL Prerequisite: This product key activates the primary underlying hardware fabric. To access the server or any virtualized VMs running on it, individual users or devices still require standard Windows Server 2016 CALs.

• Lifecycle Awareness: Please plan ahead: Windows Server 2016 reaches its official Microsoft Extended Support End Date on January 12, 2027. While this perpetual key will keep your server activated indefinitely, standard security updates from Microsoft will stop after that date unless an ESU (Extended Security Updates) program is arranged.
